I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. The Grade Ones had an excellent week and they should all be proud of their hard work and fine work habits.
In Reading we are learning about story elements (characters, setting, plot). I hope you all enjoyed listening to your child retell the story of "The Mitten". We practiced retelling the story to a partner first. The children were encouraged to use the words "first, then, next and finally" and to use descriptive words to tell how the animals arrived at the mitten. Having your child retell a story helps with oral language skills and with reading comprehension. And thank you for listening to your child read over the holidays! We will be assigning new Guided Reading Levels soon.
This will be another busy term. Here is a brief outline of SOME of the things we will be doing. In Science we have started a unit on "Force and Motion". The students will be doing a number of experiments and exploring forces such as wind, gravity, and magnetism. In Math we will work on number facts, geometry, problem solving and of course "100 DAY" activities. We are starting our Dance Unit soon in P.E. In Social Studies we will be learning about features in our world such as rivers, deserts, and mountains. We will also learn some beginning mapping skills. We continue to work on reading and writing skills, social responsibility, health & career, music and art. Life is very busy in our classroom, but we make sure we have fun too.
Thank you for your continued support!
